Foster Home Feedback
10/27/17: Donatella is a very unique looking dog. She is a gray and white merle mini Schnauzer. The merle gene is a dilution gene, causing her to have a light coat and one blue eye. She is a very nice, gentle dog. Her favorite activities are tug of war, going for walks outside, cuddling up in her dog bed when she wants alone time and sitting on or near her favorite person, as she enjoys a good ear scratch and belly rub.
Donatella has been diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago. Due to this, she does require a special diabetic food from the Vet and 2 doses of insulin per day. The insulin shots are very easy to administer and she tolerates them very well. Also, due to diabetes, cataracts have formed limiting her vision. Donatella is highly adaptable and within a week she was cruising around the house like she lived here forever. Not going to lie, there were a few times that she bumped into a wall or some furniture, but she is a very quick learner.
She also takes allergy medication as needed for itchy skin and a joint supplement due to a knee that can slip out of joint (luxating patella) which causes her to limp from time to time. She does require occasional grooming to keep her beard and eyebrows in check.
Donatella is both house trained and kennel trained. We had an adjustment period where she was quite anxious when I left her alone, but she seems to be adjusting as she gets used to my daily routine.
Diffusing a calming essential oil also seems to help. Donatella is super curious of both my cats and dogs. She does not give them much personal space when they are within her eyesight, which does annoy my dogs—but she also understands their cues and is getting better at backing off. She does get a little jealous when I am giving another dog attention but seems to be getting used to having to share my time with others.
I think Donatella would be a great companion dog for someone that is home often or in a home with a companion dog or cat. She seems to be less anxious when she has company.
Donatella is such a loving dog. It has been a joy getting to know her the past two weeks. She has so much love and loyalty to give to some lucky family.
